Commonwealth Budget 2011–12
Treasurer, The Hon. Wayne Swan MP handed down the Commonwealth Budget for 2011–12 on Tuesday 10 May 2011. There are a number of measures included that will impact on the Department of Human Services Portfolio.
A summary of measures that may affect Medicare Australia's health providers are outlined below:

- Aged Care - Residential aged care viability supplement continuation and expansion
- Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme - New listings
- Provision of Prevenar 13 vaccine on the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for a catchup program
- Diagnostic imaging - reforms
- National Mental Health Reform – Better Access Initiative
- National Mental Health Reform - Health and Wellbeing Check for three year olds
- A better start for children with a disability – Early Intervention

- Primary Care - redirection of the domestic violence referral points project

Telehealth
Telehealth was introduced on 1 July 2011 and aims to address some of the barriers to accessing medical services for Australians in eligible telehealth areas.
Telehealth provides financial incentives to eligible practitioners and aged care services who enable patients to participate in a video consultations with a specialist, consultant physician or consultant psychiatrist.
